Alternate Reality, as a Public Method
Alternate-reality campaigns ask an audience to finish the work. The 2001 game The Beast is the documented case.
An alternate-reality campaign is a designed gap. The maker publishes less than a complete story, in places a careful person can find, and the audience does the rest: comparing, gathering, arguing, sometimes meeting. That is a known method in film and game promotion. It is not a secret of any one brand, and this article is not a map of this website. Nothing below tells you where to click on japanesejesus.com.
The public case
The campaign people still point to is The Beast, made to promote the 2001 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Wikipedia, drawing on contemporary reporting, records it as a Microsoft game. It launched on March 8, 2001. It was set in 2142. The entry points turned on a fictional person, Jeanine Salla, and the death of Evan Chan. Trailers and posters credited Salla as a "sentient machine therapist." A poster carried the line that Evan Chan was murdered and Jeanine was the key. Players moved through a network of sites, on the order of fifty websites and about a thousand pages, registered so they would not look like a studio brochure.
The developers' own word for an entry, as the record preserves it, was a rabbit hole. Clues also sat in trailers, print ads, phone messages, and live events, including staged "Anti-Robot Militia" rallies in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The audience that formed around the game called itself, in its largest gathering, the Cloudmakers. Before the film opened, that list was reported at roughly 4,500 to 5,000 people. The people running the game were later called puppetmasters. Wikipedia names Jordan Weisman for the concept, Elan Lee for design, Sean Stewart as head writer, and Pete Fenlon as a fourth lead. Several of them went on to found 42 Entertainment, a company whose business was this kind of work. In 2022 The Beast received a Peabody in the digital and interactive category.
Two things in that record matter more than the plot. The game was built while it was being played: player work showed up inside the fiction. And the promotion did not, by the same accounts, save the film. A.I. did not earn its budget back at home. A method can be influential and still fail at the box office. Anyone selling alternate reality as a guaranteed brand machine is selling past the evidence.
What the method is, without the costume
The audience is asked to tolerate incomplete information. The pieces are allowed to look like ordinary documents. The pleasure is the investigation, not a reveal handed over at the door. Friction is the design, up to the point where people can still find each other and compare notes. Past that point it is just obscurity, and obscurity has no audience.
Those are general observations from a campaign that was covered, argued over, and eventually awarded in public. They are not instructions, and they are not a description of this website. This essay publishes only the history.
