The Color Is West of the Village
Shingo is not the foliage site. Oirase and Lake Towada were still coloring on 13 October 2026. The museum may already be on winter hours.
Late October is a leaf season in southern Aomori. It is not a leaf season that the village of Shingo claims for itself.
Short answer
On 13 October 2026 the prefecture listed Oirase and Lake Towada as just starting to color, peak usually late October. Shingo is not on that list. The village puts the lake about 45 minutes from the office. If the tomb is the same day, walk one section of the gorge, not all 14.7 kilometers.
What you can verify
Amazing AOMORI's 2026 foliage page was updated on 3 October 2026 and says the status is as of 13 October. For Oirase Gorge and for Lake Towada, both in Towada City, the usual peak is late October, this year's forecast is late October, and the status that day was "starting to color." The page says the dates are a guide and the weather moves them. Shingo Village is not on the table. Gonohe is not on it either. The nearest listed spot is Sannohe Castle in Sannohe Town, also just starting to color, with this year's forecast from late October. That castle is not the tomb.
Shingo's access map puts Lake Towada 30 kilometers and about 45 minutes from the village office, and Towada City 27 kilometers and about 40 minutes. Oirase is the stream that leaves the lake at Nenokuchi and runs down toward Yakeyama. It is past the city, on the way to the water. Gonohe Town gives different times because it starts in Gonohe: about 50 minutes to Oirase and about 70 minutes to the lake. Use the Shingo numbers if you are starting at the tomb.
The Environment Ministry describes the long Oirase walk as 14.7 kilometers and about 5 hours, starting from Yakeyama, and says the distance and time are a guide. The same page calls the stream about 14 kilometers from Nenokuchi to Yakeyama, and says buses run beside the path. Walk one section and ride out. That is the practical version of "one trip."
The 2026 car restriction on the gorge already happened. The project's 2026 page sets it for 7–13 September 2026, weekdays 10:00–16:00 and weekends 9:00–16:00, on about 10 kilometers of Route 102 from the Soibetsu crossing to the Nenokuchi crossing. By 16 October that rule is over. The project's FAQ gives the same 2026 dates, and says that on other foliage days the gorge can be slower than the bypass. A map of the water is Oirase Gorge. The tourism body for the lake and the stream is 十和田奥入瀬観光機構.
This film is the color, not the prefecture's table.
What the legend says
Nothing about the leaves. The mounds, the name Herai, and the Takeuchi documents are a different article. Autumn color on Oirase is a national-park fact. It does not confirm or deny the tomb.
As of 16 October 2026
If the museum is part of the day, call before you drive. The village tomb page says the museum is closed for the winter and does not give the day. Shingo Green Park says early November through late April, Wednesday closures otherwise, 9:00–17:00, 500 yen and 300 yen. Early November is close. The mounds are outdoors. The building is not a promise.
If the night is a tent, JaCamp is an English directory of campgrounds in Japan. Its own account says the Aomori set includes Towada. JaCamp does not sell the stay. Utarube Campground, on the lake's Ogura peninsula, is listed by the national parks guide as open from late April through late October. Amazing AOMORI prints 1 July through 31 October for the same site. On 16 October that published season is nearly over. Call before you count on a pitch. A still photograph of the gorge in color, which is not a status report, is in the Towada city photo library.
The road notes for the lake and the gorge are Lake Towada and Oirase in winter. Getting to the village at all is How to get to the tomb and Get There. The Japanese village page is 新郷村.
Transmissions is the list. Relics is the catalog, not a trail map.
FAQ
Is Shingo Village a foliage destination?
The prefecture's 2026 foliage table does not list Shingo. It lists Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada, both in Towada City, as starting to color, with a usual peak in late October. Shingo is the tomb. The leaves are a separate drive west.
Can the tomb and Oirase be one day?
By car, yes, if you do not walk the whole gorge. Shingo Village puts Lake Towada 30 kilometers and about 45 minutes from the village office. The Environment Ministry's long Oirase walk is 14.7 kilometers and about 5 hours. Walking all of it and visiting the tomb is two plans, not one afternoon.
Is the Christ museum open in late autumn?
The village says it closes for the winter and does not print the dates. Shingo Green Park says early November through late April. On 16 October 2026 that closure may be days away. Call 0178-78-3741 before you count on the museum.
