The Museum Closes. The Snow Does Not.
Shingo's Christ museum closes for winter. The 2026-27 day is not posted. Snow tires are an Aomori rule. Call the village before you drive.
Winter at the tomb is a closed building and a road that still has to be driven. The legend does not plow either one.
Short answer
The Christ museum in Shingo closes for the winter. The village has not posted the 2026-27 day. A notice updated on 8 November 2025 closed the building from 17 November. The mounds are outdoors. Aomori requires chains or snow tires when the road may slip. Call before you drive.
What you can verify
The village tomb page puts the Christ Village Tradition Museum at Nozuki 33-1, Herai, Shingo. Hours, when it is open, are 9:00–17:00. Closed Wednesday, except during summer vacation. Closed for the winter. The page does not print the winter dates. Admission is 500 yen for high school age and older, 300 yen for elementary and junior high students, half price for groups of 20 or more. Phone 0178-78-3741. The winter contact on that page is 新郷村ふるさと活性化公社, 0178-78-2511.
Shingo Green Park prints the same 9:00–17:00 and the same 500 and 300 yen, then a different group rate: 400 and 200 yen from 15 people. It dates the winter closure as early November through late April, and it applies that same span to the farm shop and the cafeteria at the park. Amazing AOMORI still prints 200 and 100 yen, and it still says "JR Gonohe Station." There is no JR station in Gonohe. Use the village page for the individual fee. Ask the desk which group rate it is charging. Do not buy a JR ticket to Gonohe.
The only dated closure notice on the village site, 各施設の冬季休業のお知らせ, was last updated 8 November 2025. It closed the museum from Monday 17 November, and Green Park, including the roadside station, from Tuesday 4 November, until the following April. Those weekdays are 2025, not 2026. In 2026, 4 November is a Wednesday and 17 November is a Tuesday. The notice also said the shop Christop was already in winter closure. It does not give a 2026-27 calendar. It does not say the outdoor mounds are locked, and it does not say the path is cleared. Treat the grounds as unconfirmed.
The address for a driver is the map for Nozuki 33-1. Amazing AOMORI says parking at the park is free. That line sits on the page with the wrong station and the old fee. It is the only parking sentence these pages print.
What the legend says
The village tells it as a story. The tomb page says that in 1935 a claim in the Takeuchi family documents, kept at Kōso Kōtai Jingū in what is now Kitaibaraki, Ibaraki, brought a man named Takeuchi to the village, and that he identified the mound. It also says the reader can decide whether the mounds are the graves of Christ and a brother called Isukiri. That is the legend the park is built on. Snow does not make it a historical finding. The sourced account is What are the Takenouchi documents?, the hub is Takenouchi documents, and the village's own telling, kept separate from this road note, is Jesus in Japan.
The road, and the bus that is still a courtesy
Shingo's access map, last updated 10 April 2025, measures the drive to the village office, not to the tomb:
- Hachinohe: 36 km, about 60 minutes
- Gonohe: 13 km, about 20 minutes
- Towada: 27 km, about 40 minutes
- Lake Towada: 30 km, about 45 minutes
From the office, the tomb is 3 km, about 5 minutes. The onsen is 8 km, about 15 minutes. Green Park is 10 km, about 15 minutes. Those times are not a winter promise. The lake figure in particular is a fair-weather line. The map's last update is April.
For the bus, the same page says: Nanbu Bus from Hachinohe Station to the last stop, the Gonohe Station bus stop; change to the Kanegasawa line and ride to the Kanegasawa stop; the office is about a five-minute walk. It then says the connection is poor and recommends a rental car. Phones: Nanbu Bus Hachinohe, 0178-44-7111, and Nanbu Bus Gonohe, 0178-62-3211. The company is Nanbu Bus. The tomb is another 3 km past that walk. The day's train into Hachinohe is on JR East. The station is JR Hachinohe. The longer version of this route, including the station that is only a bus stop, is How to get to the tomb. The Japanese note, which already states the winter equipment rule, is キリストの墓への行き方.
The village bus is the Mizubasho timetable PDF linked from the access map, revised 1 April 2025. It says Sundays, holidays, and the year-end and New Year period are suspended. It does not print the dates of that year-end period, and it does not print a separate winter timetable. Gonohe's community bus is a different operator for the middle leg. Its question page says that on a snow day or in a typhoon you call the town policy section or Nanbu Bus Gonohe, 0178-62-3211. The town's April 2026 timetable says every bus stops from 31 December through 3 January. None of this is a winter schedule for the road to the mounds. If the bus is the plan, call both companies the day before. The village's own advice is still the car.
Tires are not optional once the road may slip. Aomori's road-traffic rule, article 16, says that on a road where snow or ice makes slipping a risk, a driver must either fit chains or another anti-slip device to every drive wheel, or fit snow tires to every wheel. The national road office in Aomori says ordinary tires on that road are a violation, and it prints a fine of 50,000 yen or less under the Road Traffic Act, with a traffic penalty of 7,000 yen for a large vehicle and 6,000 yen for an ordinary one. The rule is not written as a national-highway exception. The same page's email alerts for the Tsugaru and Kamikita expressways are dated 19 December 2024 through 20 March 2025. That window is a finished winter. Do not read it as this season's service.
Which roads close is a different list, and this winter's list is not up. The prefecture's closure index was updated 27 March 2026. It links Reiwa 7 closure materials and Reiwa 8 reopening materials. It does not post a Reiwa 8 closure schedule. The Reiwa 7 set is the winter that ended in 2026. It included the Hakkoda–Towada Gold Line, Route 103 from Sukayu to Yachi, and Route 454 from Shingo toward the Akita border and on to Utarube, plus short prefectural roads inside the village. Those are not the Hachinohe-to-office distance the village prints. A map can still choose them. Shingo Green Park's notice of 26 April 2026 said the gate on Route 454 past the roadside station had reopened on 24 April, that the collapsed section was alternating one-way traffic, and that the road on toward Utarube might still be closed. That notice is six months old. The morning list is 青森みち情報.
The desk for tourism is 企画商工観光課. The hall number, printed on the village pages, is 0178-78-2111. A Reiwa 8 subsidy notice also gives that desk a direct line, 0178-20-8473. The hall is open 8:15–17:00, Monday to Friday, and closed on holidays and from 29 December through 3 January. The organization table is where the desk is named. If the museum phone does not answer, the winter contact remains 0178-78-2511. Green Park prints that office as 9:00–17:00, closed Saturday and Sunday.
What is open when the museum is not
Shingo Onsenkan is the bath the village lists as open all year, 9:00–21:00, closed Wednesday. The outdoor bath may stop in winter. The page says "may," not "does." Bathing is 450 yen for junior high age and older, 150 yen for elementary students, and 60 yen for infants. A room-only night is 3,500 yen for an adult, 2,000 yen for an elementary student, and free for an infant without bedding. Eight Japanese rooms. Phone 0178-78-3050. Address: 5-4 Onsenzawa, Saigoshi. The map is the door. The restaurant Washitei closes with the building. Weekday lunch 11:00–14:30, weekday dinner 17:00–20:00 with last order at 19:45, Sunday 11:00–20:00, no Tuesday dinner. The page prints hours and no dish price. A Wednesday arrival has no bath and no meal there. The rooms are a price list, not a vacancy. The stay note on this site is Where to stay near Shingo.
Green Park's facilities page lists Nozawa Onsen, the source bath, at 9:00–21:00, closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, phone 0178-78-2079. It does not say "all year." Do not count on it until you call. The shop and cafeteria at Green Park carry the early-November to late-April closure. The park is not a winter lunch plan.
Priced meals that were on their own pages on 16 October 2026 are in Where to eat near the tomb. This note does not re-check those yen figures. Gonohe is the 13 km, about 20 minutes, on the access map. Pack food if the Wednesday closure and the winter cafeteria are the same day.
Oirase is a separate winter
The ice is west of the village, in Towada, not at the mounds. The autumn note is Shingo in late autumn. The winter road note is Oirase in winter. The lake page is Lake Towada. Do not turn the village's 45 minutes into a plan that crosses a closed pass.
The public booking site for the gorge ice-bus, frozen-oirase.com, still shows 20 December 2025 through 1 March 2026. That season is over. Amazing AOMORI's Japanese event page shows the same finished window. Its English event page still shows 20 December 2024 through 2 March 2025. The operator is TOWADA TRAVEL, the Towada Oirase Tourism Organization, phone 0176-24-3006, 9:00–19:00, closed New Year's Day on the booking site. Do not book from those dates.
Two operators have published a window for the coming winter. Read the page again before you pay.
Oirase Keiryu Hotel by Hoshino Resorts lists a full-gorge night tour from 25 December 2026 through 28 February 2027, 19:20–21:15, 4,950 yen, free for infants age 0–3, meeting at the hotel's Keiryu Base. The page does not say the ice is guaranteed, and it does not say a visitor who is not staying at the hotel can book. The hotel is the meeting point that page names.
FORESTON's ice walk lists 4 January 2027 through 27 February 2027, except Thursdays. Snowshoes. Elementary age and older. 11,000 yen for one person, 8,250 yen from two, tax included, with the shoe rental and a tea stop. The operator says the tour can be cancelled if the snow is short or the weather is bad, and that the course changes with the day. The same page says the JR bus is, in principle, suspended in winter, and that a Towada Kanko Dentetsu bus runs from Towada city. That JR line is the operator's sentence. It is not a JR East notice read for this note. Base: 64-179 Yakeyama, Horitate, Towada, phone 080-6033-2510. The map is the meeting point. The gorge itself is Oirase. Do not invent a walk off the tour. The gorge is a special protection zone.
Towada City's page for the Lake Towada Winter Story still describes the 28th edition, 30 January through 23 February 2026, at Yasumiya. That edition is over. The page does not give 2027 dates. Phone 0176-75-1531. A date you find on an event database is not this page.
This film is one waterfall on one day of the winter that has already ended.
As of 19 October 2026
Car from Hachinohe, snow tires or chains before the road requires them, and a phone call before you count on the museum. The pages in this note were read on 19 October 2026. The 2026-27 closure day for the building was not among them.
The approach from the station is Get there and the journey. The park as a place, rather than a winter rule, is Christ Park. The Japanese page for the mounds is キリストの墓.
Get the next field note from Transmissions.
The catalog's cold-weather layer is the Portal Lantern Sweatshirt. It is a shirt. It is not a tire, and it is not a room at the onsen. The rest of the catalog is Relics.
FAQ
Is the Christ museum open in a Shingo winter?
The village lists a winter closure and does not print the 2026-27 dates. A notice last updated 8 November 2025 closed the museum from Monday 17 November, which was that season. Shingo Green Park's standing page says early November through late April. Call 0178-78-3741, or the winter desk at 0178-78-2511.
Do I need snow tires to drive to the tomb?
On a road that may slip from snow or ice, Aomori's road-traffic rule requires chains on every drive wheel, or snow tires on every wheel. The national road office in Aomori says ordinary tires on that road are a violation. The rule is not limited to national highways.
Can I see frozen Oirase on the same trip?
Not by using the village's 45 minutes to Lake Towada as a winter road. Last winter the prefecture closed the Gold Line and Route 454 from Shingo toward the lake. The 2026-27 closure list is not on the index, which was updated 27 March 2026. Booked ice tours publish their own windows. Do not walk the gorge alone.
