Eat in Hachinohe Before the Drive to Shingo
Senbei-jiru, Hasshoku, morning markets, and Miroku Yokocho in Hachinohe, for a trip to Shingo's tomb. Checked 26 October 2026.
The Shinkansen stops in Hachinohe. The tomb is an hour farther, in Shingo, and the priced lunch is back here at the railhead.
Short answer
As of 26 October 2026, Hachinohe is the railhead, about an hour by car from the Shingo office. Senbei-jiru is broth with a cracker made for the pot. Hasshoku's market hall is closed Wednesday, and on 27 and 28 October. The Sunday quay market runs March through December. Priced bowls are at the station and inside Hasshoku.
What you can verify
Pages below were read on 26 October 2026. A rural kitchen can close for a wedding or a staff day. Call.
The soup
The Hachinohe Senbei-jiru Institute defines senbei-jiru as a local dish of the Hachinohe area, eaten as a soup or as a hot pot. Broth is taken from meat, fish, vegetables, or mushrooms. Into that goes a wheat-flour and salt nanbu senbei made for the pot. They call it otsuyu senbei. It is broken in and simmered. They say it is baked so that it keeps a texture and does not dissolve. They publish the name as 八戸せんべい汁™.
The institute is a volunteer group. Its home page says no full-time staff sits in an office, and asks you to use the form.
Its story page is the institute's own history, not a city ordinance. It places an older habit, soft wheat and buckwheat crackers torn into soup, in the late Edo period. It thinks the bowl that uses today's hard senbei appeared in the Meiji 30s (1897–1906). It says a cracker that holds together in the pot, the otsuyu senbei, showed up around Showa 30 (1955), and that the dish spread as home cooking in the Showa 40s (1965–1974). In 2003 the institute began introducing the name nationwide. Treat that paragraph as their account.
The shop map says it lists 190 restaurants and that the map is the 2018 edition. The same page says shops have closed or moved since then. This note does not send you to a pin on that map.
A priced bowl at the station
いかめしや烹鱗 (Hourin) is on the third floor of Hotel Mets Hachinohe, 青森県八戸市尻内町字館田1-1, one minute from the Shinkansen gates at JR Hachinohe. Phone 0178-70-2712. Fax on the same block is 0178-70-2713. The company footer on that page is a second address, 八戸市柏崎. That district is still Hachinohe. It is not the restaurant, and it is not the city of Kashiwazaki in Niigata. The meal is the Mets address.
Breakfast is 6:15–9:30. The buffet is 1,300 yen, tax included. The rest of the day is 10:30–20:30, last order 20:00. The page says open every day. A news line says 21 October 2026 had shortened hours for staff training, so the standing line is the rule they print, and a single day can still move. Spend 1,500 yen or more, show the parking ticket, and they give one free hour at the Utree garage. That is the parking line. It is not a lot under the restaurant.
Tax-included prices on the page: ikameshi and senbei-jiru set 1,290 yen. Several other sets let you swap miso soup for senbei-jiru for 380 yen more. Hachinohe ramen, chicken-bone and niboshi soy, 880 yen. The Aomori ikameshi set, with miso shellfish and senbei-jiru, 2,790 yen. The Hourin seafood-bowl set, 3,550 yen. Those are prices printed on the page. This note does not call them the cheapest and dearest lines, because a later edit can add a plate. Small plates in a set can change with the photo, and the bowl sets say the fish changes with what they bought.
A visitor filmed the room in 2020. The prices in this note are the page above, not the film.
Hasshoku Center
八食センター (Hasshoku Center) is at 〒039-1161 青森県八戸市河原木字神才22-2. Phone 0178-28-9311. The outline says it opened in November 1980. Parking on that page is about 1,500 cars, ground level and the second floor together.
Standing hours on the outline and on the access page: market hall 9:00–18:00, the food stalls called 味横丁 (Aji Yokocho) 9:00–18:00, kitchen stadium 9:00–21:00. Closed Wednesday and New Year's Day for the hall and Aji Yokocho, with extra openings in busy weeks and on holidays. Obon and the new year change the hours. The outline says to use the calendar.
The October 2026 calendar is more specific than "every Wednesday." Wednesday 14 October is listed open. Tuesday 27 October and Wednesday 28 October list the market hall and Aji Yokocho closed, and the kitchen stadium open 9:00–21:00. If you are here on the day this note is dated, the hall is on the closed line. Read the calendar again if your date is later. The month after this one was not what this note quoted.
Amazing AOMORI, the prefecture's page, prints the same address and the same main phone. It says the kitchen stadium's closure is New Year's Day, and it sends you back to the center's site for the rest. It also prints a charcoal-grill yard, 七厘村 (Shichirin-mura): 500 yen for an adult, 200 yen for an elementary student, free for a small child, for two hours from the desk, phone 0178-29-4451. That fee is on the prefecture page. It is not on the center's outline. Call the grill number before you count on it.
Inside the kitchen stadium, 八食市場寿司 prints hours of 10:00–21:00, phone 0178-21-1844, and the same street address. The page does not print a weekly closure. The seasonal plate board is dated 3 October 2026 and names, among other fish, aka-ika, yari-ika, raw saba, and a cured saba. Plate prices on that page are 150, 210, 630, 730, and 1,140 yen, tax included, for two pieces of nigiri or one roll. This note does not pin each fish to a band. The soup lines, on the same page and without their own date, are senbei-jiru 430 yen and ichigoni 930 yen. The soup heading says the contents change with the season. The plate notes say every item is tax included. The soup heading does not repeat that sentence.
By car, the center says about 10 minutes from Hachinohe IC or Hachinohe-Kita IC. From the Aomori and Misawa direction you cannot get off at Hachinohe IC, and you cannot get back on toward Aomori and Misawa from that IC either. The 150 yen bus runs from JR Hachinohe, east exit, platform 4, to the kitchen stadium's east door. Any stop on that bus is 150 yen. A child's fare is half. It runs on a market-hall closure, and it does not run on 1 January. The timetable file is marked April 2026. The center also runs a bus at 250 yen or less from Hon-Hachinohe through the downtown terminal. That bus does not go to the Shinkansen station. The prefecture's Hasshoku page says Nanbu Bus, about 12 minutes from JR Hachinohe, stop name 八食センター, then a one-minute walk. This note did not open a Nanbu timetable, so it does not merge the 12 minutes and the 150 yen into one ride. The operator's site is Nanbu Bus. The day's trains are JR East.
On a map: Hasshoku Center and Hourin.
Two morning markets
These are different doors. One is a city market on weekday mornings. One is a Sunday market on the quay, and only in season.
八戸市魚菜小売市場, the city fish-and-vegetable market, was updated on the city site on 8 October 2026. Address 青森県八戸市大字湊町字久保38番地1, in front of JR Hachinohe Line Mutsu-Minato Station. Phone 0178-33-6151. The station is a one-minute walk. There is no lot of its own. Hours are about 3:00 to 14:00. Fresh fish and sashimi shops run until about 11:00. Salted and dried goods until about 14:00. The cafeteria, 朝めし処 魚菜, is about 5:00 to 10:00, and the page says it does not serve lunch. Closed Sunday, the second Saturday of the month, and 1–2 January, with a longer new-year break possible. The page says the days before Obon and at year end sometimes open on a closure. It also says the cafeteria is closed on 13 November 2026. The city dates the market to 15 September 1953, and a renovation that reopened in December 2022. No dish price is printed. This note does not invent one. Map.
館鼻岸壁朝市 is the Sunday quay market. The association's page, read on 26 October 2026, says it runs from March through December, on Sundays, from about 4:00 until about 8:30, with about 300 stalls as of 2026, along about 800 meters. Address on that page: 青森県八戸市新湊三丁目. By car, 20 minutes from Hachinohe IC, 25 minutes from Hachinohe Station, 10 minutes from downtown. Mutsu-Minato Station is a 20-minute walk on the association page. The page names a Sunday loop bus, いさば号, getting off at 館鼻漁港前, and a JR Hachinohe Line train run for the market. It does not print a fare. The next date on that page was 25 October, then 1 November. Extra dates named there are 5 May, 13 August, and 30 December. One line calls 30 December a Tuesday. Map.
VISIT Hachinohe dates the market to 2004 and describes it as one of the largest in Japan. The same page says sunrise until about 9:00, which is later than the association's "about 8:30." It puts the walk from Mutsu-Minato at 15 minutes, not 20. Parking is about 500 cars, free. Phone 070-2004-6524, email info@minatonichiyouasaichikai.com. Its 2026 table is Sundays from mid-March through December, with extras on 5 May, 13 August, and 30 December, and a closure on 17 May. It marks 30 December as a Wednesday. The two sites do not print the same weekday for that extra day. VISIT also says the Isaba loop bus does not run on an extra, non-Sunday market. A walking tour on the same page, 八戸さんぽマイスター, is Sundays at 6:30, 90 minutes, 2,000 yen a person, with the fee dated April 2026, phone 080-1808-2138 between 10:00 and 17:00. This note did not open the guide's own site. VISIT prints sample train and bus clocks and says a timetable change can move them. Use JR East for the morning you go. Neither page prints a stall's senbei-jiru price. A bowl at the quay is not a price this note can give you.
On a Tuesday, including 27 October 2026, the quay market is not the plan. The city market at Mutsu-Minato is the morning door, unless that Tuesday is a posted exception.
The alley
八戸屋台村 みろく横丁 says it is 26 stalls in the downtown, and that it reopened on 20 April 2024 with 13 stalls replaced. The index does not print one set of hours or one closure for the lane. Each stall has its own page. The only yen figure on the index is for 串揚げ酒場 織田: skewers from 50 yen. That is a starting price for one stick. It is not a meal, and this note does not have that stall's hours or its closure.
The access page places the lane between 三日町 (Mikka-machi) and 六日町 (Muika-machi), and names 長横町 (Nagayokocho) as the restaurant street around it. The secretariat address on the page is 〒031-0031 八戸市番町4-1-906. That is the office line, not a door number for the lane. Walk: 10 minutes from JR Hon-Hachinohe (本八戸), the downtown station on the local line, and 5 minutes from city hall. Hon-Hachinohe is not the Shinkansen station. From the Shinkansen station, the page says a downtown shuttle of about 20 minutes, getting off at the last stop, 八日町 (Yoka-machi), or about 15 minutes by car. This note did not find a single opening hour to attach to that shuttle. Hon-Hachinohe and the lane.
Sake with a posted fee
八戸酒造 posts a brewery visit at 〒031-0812 青森県八戸市大字湊町字本町9番地, a 10-minute walk from Mutsu-Minato on that page. The brands named there are 陸奥八仙 and 陸奥男山. The visit runs all year, Monday to Friday, and also Saturday in the winter window of October through February. Temporary closures are marked. Hours 10:00–16:00, about 40 minutes, 500 yen including a tasting, paid at the counter. Reserve on the calendar or at 0178-20-0443. The same page links a boat. This note does not quote a boat fare. A founding year is not taken from this page, because other directories do not agree with each other, and this page does not print one. Map.
Beer on the same approach is a different note. Breweries on the road to Shingo covers Kaneku Jozo in Nango and the Oirase brewery. It does not put a brewery in the village.
What the tourism site says about the fish
VISIT Hachinohe's food page is the tourism account, and it should be read as that. It describes senbei-jiru the same way the institute does: chicken or mackerel broth, otsuyu senbei, simmered with the other ingredients. It describes ichigoni as a clear soup of sea urchin and abalone from the Hachinohe coast, and it offers a folk reading of the name, the uni in the bowl looking like wild strawberries in mist. Hasshoku Market Sushi sells a bowl under the name ichigoni and does not print those ingredients, so this note does not treat the 930 yen bowl as that recipe.
The same page says Hachinohe Port lands more squid than any other port in Japan, names aka-ika, near-shore surume from about July, and yari-ika in winter, and describes a minced-squid rice bowl called 八戸ばくだん. It says Hachinohe maeoki saba is a brand for mackerel caught, in a set period from autumn on, in the near waters from Sanriku northward, and landed at Hachinohe, and that people in the trade call it the fattiest. Those superlatives are the tourism site's lines. This note did not recheck a fisheries yearbook. The fish you can point at on a current board are the squid and saba names on the Hasshoku sushi page, and the ikameshi at Hourin.
What the legend says
Nothing you can order. The Jesus-in-Japan account does not name a kitchen, and the mound is not a dining room. Senbei-jiru is a regional dish with an institute and a trademark line. It is not a rite at the tomb. A festival ramen contest is a festival. The priced meals near the tomb itself, in Gonohe and on the Oirase road, are a separate note, and the same note in Japanese is 墓の近くの食事.
As of 26 October 2026
Shingo's access map prints Hachinohe at 36 km, about 60 minutes, and then measures sights from the village office. The tomb is 3 km, about 5 minutes, on that second list. VISIT Hachinohe says Tokyo to Hachinohe on the Tohoku Shinkansen is about 2 hours 45 minutes with no transfer. Fares and the Hayabusa of the day are on JR East. The road from the station to the park, and the bus that is a poor connection, are How to get to the tomb. The longer shape of the trip is Tokyo to Shingo, the journey, and the pilgrimage. The park page is Christ Park. The Japanese village page is 新郷村.
For a Tuesday arrival, the standing doors are Hourin at the Shinkansen station, the city market at Mutsu-Minato until late morning, and the Hasshoku kitchen stadium if the calendar still lists it open. The market hall is closed on the October calendar for the 27th and the 28th. The Sunday quay market waits for Sunday. The sake counter is a weekday visit unless a temporary closure is on the calendar. The alley is an evening lane with no single hour.
Buying from a producer is a different errand from sitting down. Wild Food Japan compares venison, boar, kyon, sea salt, free-range eggs, and matcha from the producers' own shops. The order goes to the producer. The site does not list the restaurants in this note, and it does not sell the meal.
Transmissions for the next note. Relics if you want an object from the trip instead of a bowl.
FAQ
What is Hachinohe senbei-jiru?
The Hachinohe Senbei-jiru Institute defines it as a local soup or hot pot: broth from meat, fish, vegetables, or mushrooms, with a flour-and-salt nanbu senbei made for the pot, called otsuyu senbei, broken in and simmered. Its restaurant map is a 2018 edition. Do not use that map as a live list.
Where is a bowl with a published price?
As of 26 October 2026, Hourin beside JR Hachinohe Station prints an ikameshi and senbei-jiru set at 1,290 yen, tax included, and says it is open every day. Hasshoku Market Sushi, inside the kitchen stadium, prints senbei-jiru at 430 yen and ichigoni at 930 yen, open 10:00-21:00, with no regular closure on that page.
Are the morning markets open every day?
No. Tatehana quay market is Sundays from March through December, plus extra days on the posted calendars. The city fish-and-vegetable market at Mutsu-Minato Station is closed Sunday, the second Saturday, and 1-2 January. Hasshoku's market hall is closed Wednesday and New Year's Day, and the October 2026 calendar also closes it on Tuesday 27 October.
